Family background

Daniel Mongan was born c1832 at Tyrone, Northern Ireland, the son of Edward Mongan and Ann Kiernan (or Carney). He married (1) Bridget Sloane (1832-72) in Northern Ireland before immigrating to Moreton Bay, Queensland, in 1854 by the ship ‘Monsoon’. This couple had four sons and four daughters. He married (2) Honorah Hickey 26 December 1872 at Sydney, NSW, and they had two sons and a daughter. Daniel Mongan died 27 December 1876 at his home, the Crown Inn, Old Newtown Road, Darlington, aged 42 years, and he was interred in the Catholic Section of Petersham Cemetery. An Administration of his estate and assets was valued at £200.

Local government service

Daniel Mongan was an alderman on Darlington Council in 1869-74. He was the Returning Officer for the council in 1873.
