Family background

George Hubert Thomas Best was born 12 August 1888 at Waterloo, NSW, son of William Best and his wife Maria Ann Moody. He did not marry and died 4 July 1923, aged 34 years, at Marrickville, NSW; he was interred in the Church of England Section of Rookwood Cemetery. Best lived at 14 Bligh Street, Newtown

Occupation & interests

George Hubert Best worked for the family business, Best & Company, Timber Merchants, City Road, Darlington. George Best for many years was a regular visitor to Austinmer, NSW, at weekends and on holidays. He was an active member of the local surf club, and took a great interest in the advancement of Austinmer generally. Best had a bachelor’s degree in engineering.

Local government service

George Hubert Best was an alderman on Darlington Council in 1920-22. His father William and brother Leslie were also aldermen on Darlington Council.
