Family background

The birth of George Joseph Cooke (or Cook) was registered at Newtown in 1881 to James and Mary Cook. He married Mary Josephine MacFadden in 1928 at Rose Bay. They had one daughter who became a Roman Catholic nun. In 1939, Cooke was listed on the electoral roll as a chauffeur living at 33 Binning Street, Erskineville. When his wife acquired a one-third share in 7 Latimer Road, Bellevue Hill in October 1940, he was recorded as a labourer living at Rose Bay. His wife, Mary Josephine Cooke died at 7 Latimer Road, Bellevue Hill on 15 October 1950. George Joseph Cooke died in Brisbane on 29 July 1957.

Local government service

George Joseph Cooke was an alderman on Erskineville Council in 1938-48. He was mayor in 1945.
