Family background

George Dowling was born c1838 son of Richard Dowling and wife Jane. He married Elizabeth Thrift (1839-1935) at St James Church, Sydney, 18 September 1861, and they had three sons and five daughters. Dowling died 13 December 1923, aged 85 years, at his residence ‘Thagoons’, 10 Heighway Avenue, Ashfield, NSW, and he was interred in the Church of England Section of Rookwood Cemetery. He left a Will and his estate and assets were valued at £912. George Dowling lived in Darlington Road, Darlington.

Occupation & interests

George Dowling was a builder. He was the contractor for the erection of St Andrews Anglican Church, Summer Hill between 1881 and 1885 and the Ashfield Wesleyan Sunday School in 1886. He was a Freemason and a member of Captain Cook Lodge No 1853.

Local government service

George Dowling was an alderman on Darlington Council in 1883-84. Dowling was also an alderman on Ashfield Council.
