Family background

According to his age at death, George Birrell Straw Ellis was born in 1863. He married Ada Barton of Bathurst at Holy Trinity Church, Erskineville on 28 November 1894. His address in 1911 was 3 Erskineville Road, Erskineville but by 1917 he was living at Eastbourne, Park Road, Marrickville. He died at his residence 18 Thompson Street, Earlwood on 4 January 1941 aged 78 with five living children. He was cremated at Rookwood.

Occupation & interests

George Ellis formerly of England was registered as a pharmacist at 3 Erskineville Road on 6 April 1886. He was a member of the Pharmaceutical Society of NSW.

Community activity

Ellis was involved with the Newtown Masonic Hall Company. He was a member of Kilwinning Orient No 14, United Grand Lodge.

Local government service

George Ellis was an alderman on Erskineville Council in 1900-04, representing North Ward. He resigned in 1905. He was re-elected, representing Middle Ward from 1908 to 1910 and again in 1914-16.
