Family background

George Ives was born in Brentwood, Essex, England in 1853 and arrived in NSW in 1855. He lived with his father on Rochford Street in 1888. In 1890 he married Harriet E P Day. George Ives died in a private hospital, Marrickville on 3 December 1935. He was then living at 2 John Street, Bexley. He was buried in the Independent cemetery, Rookwood.

Occupation & interests

His father Frederick Ives conducted the Macdonaldtown Brickyards, which were still operating by 1888. In 1883, George Ives was working as a teamster.

Community activity

George Ives was a member of the Loyal St Johns Lodge No 6, Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows.

Local government service

George Ives was an alderman on Macdonaldtown (Erskineville) Council in 1883-90. He was mayor in 1887 and 1890.
