Family background

George Edward Smail was the eighth child of Alexander Smail and his wife Violet, née McLeod. He was born in Sydney in 1855. In 1887 he married Sarah E (1856–95), the daughter of George and Elizabeth Guinery, at Paddington. George Smail died on 6 August 1908 and was buried in his father’s family vault in the Presbyterian section of Rookwood Cemetery.

 

 

 

 

 

Occupation & interests

George Smail was trained in his father’s business and took over the family bakery after Alexander Smail died in 1867. In 1885, George Edward Smail was living at 8   Princes Street, Millers Point. In 1895 he was still advertising as a baker at 10 Argyle Street, Millers Point.

Local government service

George Smail was elected as Alderman for Gipps Ward, 29 November 1893 to 6 December 1900. He was a member of the Finance Committee in 1899 and the Works Committee and the Garbage Disposal Committee in 1900.
