Family background

Henry Stephens was baptised 5 October 1817 at Chippenham, Wiltshire, England, son of Henry Stephens and his wife Elizabeth. He married Harriett Tylee 18 September 1842 at Bath St Saviour, Somerset, England, and they had four children. Henry Stephens and his family immigrated to Sydney, NSW, in 1853 on board the ship ‘Bussorah Merchant’. Stephens died 16 June 1891, aged 74 years, at his home 19 Newtown Road, Darlington, and he was interred in Rookwood Cemetery. He left a Will and his estate and assets were valued at £5,205. Henry Stephens lived at 19 Park Street, Sydney.

Occupation & interests

Henry Stephens was a boot maker. He was the Treasurer for The NSW League for the Encouragement of Colonial Industries which encouraged all native industries. He retired from his boot making business in 1882 when he put up for auction the machinery etc used in conjunction with the business.
