Family background

John Edward Alexander was born at Newcastle, NSW in 1880, son of John William Alexander and Agnes née Miles. In 1905 he married Mabel Gertrude Gough at Sydney. He died on 30 August 1942 at Double Bay, aged 62 years.

John Alexander was a vice-president of Glebe Rowing Club.

Local government service

John Welby, a retired police officer, who failed in his attempt to become a Glebe councillor, alleged Alexander said he would have his building application ‘fixed up’ for 200 pounds. Alexander denied the allegation; ‘At no time’, he said, ‘did any alderman get money for his vote’.
