Family background

John Gibson was born on 22 June 1812 in Longbenton, Northumberland, England, son of James Gibson and Ann Allen. He married (1) Margaret Gibson (1806-1866) on 20 July 1832 in Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland, England. There were two sons. He married (2) Irene Elizabeth Freeman (-1903) on 3 August 1868 in Sydney, NSW. John Gibson died on 4 November 1886 at his residence, ’Swiss Cottage’ Upper Picton, NSW, aged 74 years. He lived at Wellington Street, Waterloo in 1870.

Local government service

John Gibson was an alderman on Waterloo Council in 1871-73. His son Percy was an alderman on Waterloo Council in 1867-69. He was elected chairman of the Finance Committee of Waterloo Council in 1872.
