Michael Lee was trained as an electrical engineer. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree and an Honours Degree in Engineering.

Parliamentary service

Michael Lee was elected to the House of Representatives as member for Dobell from 1984 until his defeat in November 2001. He was a Minister in the Hawke and Keating Governments, serving as Minister for Resources (March-December 1993), Minister for Communications (23 December 1993-30 January 1994), Minister for Communication and the Arts (30 January 1994-11 March 1996), and Minister for Tourism (24 March 1993-11 March 1996). In Opposition, he was subsequently Shadow Minister for Health.

Local government service

Michael Lee was elected to the City of Sydney Council in November 2003 and served until 2008. He was committed to improved council services, better quality childcare, a safer community environment, and more open spaces. He was a long-term member of the Australian Labor Party (ALP).
