Family background

William Henry Lawrence Grogan was born 28 September 1893 in Mount Hope, NSW, son of Daniel James Grogan and Margaret Eveline Nicholson. He married Kathleen Margaret McDermott (1889-1968) on 26 January 1916 in Cobar, NSW and there was at least one child (Irene 1917-82). Grogan died on 28 April 1956 in Redfern, NSW, aged 62 years and he was buried in the Roman Catholic Section of Botany Cemetery. He lived at 4 Trevelyn Avenue, Rosebery.

Occupation & interests

Grogan was a hairdresser. Elected a State Labor alderman, William Grogan had strong links with the union movement. State Labor was socially conservative and anti-communist.

Local government service

William Henry Grogan was an alderman on Waterloo Council in 1934-44. He was mayor in 1941-42.
