Family background

Alexander Rennie Cowie was born 28 May 1831 at Dyce, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, the son of David Cowie and Isabel Mitchell. He married (1) Janet C Christie (1829-1872) 16 July 1852 at Barony, Lanarkshire, Scotland, and they had five sons and three daughters. Cowie and his wife immigrated to Sydney, NSW, in 1858 on board the ship ‘Rattler’. He married (2) Sarah Lambert 15 October 1879 at Glebe, and they had three sons. Cowie died 7 October 1905 at RPA Hospital, Camperdown, NSW, and he was interred in the Presbyterian Section of Rookwood Cemetery. He did not leave a Will. Alexander Rennie Cowie lived at 42 Cleveland Street, Darlington.

Occupation & interests

Alexander Rennie Cowie successfully tendered for the construction of several road and sewage works for Sydney City Council.

Local government service

Alexander Cowie was an alderman on Darlington Council in 1866. He resigned in February 1867.
