Family background
Athol John Jurd was born on 29 November 1915, son of Leslie Jurd and Kathleen nee McElhone. In 1941 he married Patricia McGowen at Canterbury. There were two sons and two daughters of the marriage. He died at Hillsdale on 24 March 1997, aged 81 years. Patricia Jurd died on 15 November 1991, aged 71 years.
Occupation & interests
After passing the Pharmacy Board examinations in December 1936, Jurd worked as a chemist at 373 Glebe Point Road, Glebe.
Community activity
On the corner of Glebe Point Road and Forsyth Street Jack McElhone ran a wine and spirits shop where customers bought their alcoholic drinks. According to local folklore, Jack gave them the headache, and later they would cross over to chemist Athol on the other corner who would cure it. Both men were great characters and very keen punters.
Local government service
Following the resignation of May Pitt, an extraordinary municipal election was held on 23 November 1946 at which Athol Jurd was elected.
