Family background
George Andrew was born in about 1815 in Manchester, England, the son of John Andrew and Mary. He married Sarah Fairhurst (1813-92) on 12 August 1838 in Manchester, England. George and Mary had two sons, George and Thomas and a daughter Agnes.
Andrew and family arrived in Sydney as Bounty Immigrants (part of an assisted immigration scheme) in 1842 on the ship Marchioness of Blue. He lived at George Street, Redfern in about 1881. Andrew died 28 October 1895 at 91 Regent Street, Redfern, aged 80 years. He was buried in the Old Church of England Section of Rookwood Cemetery. Andrew left a will and his estate and assets were assessed at £735.
Occupation & interests
George Andrew worked as a bricklayer and, later in life, a draper on Regent Street, Redfern. He left an estate valued at £735 in 1895.
Community activity
On his death in 1895, he was described as ‘most highly respected in the district’ of Redfern.
Local government service
George Andrew was nominated on 20 January 1869 to represent the Redfern Ward. He was an alderman on Redfern Council in 1869-86.
