Family background
John Humphries was born c1825 at Cavan, Ireland, the son of Richard Humphries. He married Annie Allerton (1825-96) at St Andrew’s Church, Sydney and they had two sons. He died 14 November 1903 at his residence ‘Dahlia Lodge’ 51 Alma Street, Darlington and he was interred in the Old Church of England Section of Rookwood Cemetery. He left no Will. John Humphries lived at 51 Alma Street, Darlington.
Occupation & interests
John Humphries in partnership with Isaac Allerton carried on a business as drapers and hosiers, in Parramatta Street, Sydney. This partnership was dissolved in 1865 and John Humphries opened a new draper shop at 688 Brickfield Hill. He retired from business in December 1871 and arranged for his entire stock to be sold by auction.
Community activity
John Humphries was the Returning Officer for MacDonaldtown Council in 1876. He was the Darlington Council Treasurer in 1879.
Local government service
John Humphries was elected as an alderman on Darlington Council in 1879.
