Family background
John Patrick McCarthy was born in 1894 to Denis McCarthy and his wife Catherine (nee Cooney) who were living in Surry Hills. His uncle was Reverend William McCarthy, Assistant-Superior of the Irish Christian Brothers. McCarthy lived at 2 Knight Street, Erskineville. He does not appear to have married. There were no children or spouse recorded on his death notice. John Patrick McCarthy died on 24 July 1965 at the Sacred Heart Hospital, Darlinghurst. He was buried in the Roman Catholic cemetery, Botany.
Occupation & interests
John Patrick McCarthy was a justice of the peace (JP). McCarthy was a member of the Alexandria-Erskineville Bowling Club. He was a strong and often abrasive Labor supporter, who refused to defer to royalty and firmly promoted workers’ rights.
Local government service
John Patrick McCarthy was an alderman on Erskineville Council in 1923-48, representing South Ward. He was mayor in 1926, 1936, 1939, 1944 and 1948.
