Family background

Joseph Jones was born 1 January 1830 at Lambeth, England, the son of John Jones and Mary Organ. He married (1) Elizabeth Ritches (1828-1864).  Jones and his wife immigrated to Sydney in 1855 by the ship ‘Queen of England’. He married (2) Martha Ann Jarrold (1843-1910) at the Wesleyan Chapel, Newtown, 17 April 1865 and they had five sons and a daughter. Joseph Jones died 23 July 1896 at Hurstville, NSW, aged 66 years and he was interred in the Methodist Section of Woronora Cemetery. He left a Will and his estate and assets were valued at £340. Joseph Jones lived 79 Alma Street, Darlington.

Joseph Jones was a carpenter. He was a Freemason and a member of Lodge Native Rose of Australia Oddfellows.

Local government service

Joseph Jones was an alderman on Darlington Council in 1865-67.
