Family background
Peter McManus was born on 22 June 1898 at West Wallsend, NSW, the son of James Bartholomew McManus, a farmer, and Elizabeth Hibbert. He married Essie Brownlee (1900-1966) at Newcastle, NSW, on 2 July 1921 and they had 4 sons and 1 daughter. He lived at 48 Regent Street, Redfern.
McManus died on 15 August 1942 at Sydney, aged 44 years. He was buried at Woronora Cemetery.
Occupation & interests
On his marriage certificate in 1921, Peter McManus was listed as a miner living at West Wallsend. He then worked as a grocer in Redfern. He was representative of non-Labor alderman – male middle class, self employed and conservative in outlook and guardian of the status quo, rather than an agent of social change.

Peter McManus was involved in the Irish National Foresters Benefit Society.
