Family background

Richard Meredith Fox was born 31 December 1873 at Waterloo, NSW, the son of Michael Henry Fox and Mary Ellen McDonnell.

Fox married Eileen Caroline Lockhart (d1952) at Sydney on 2 June 1923 and they had 2 sons. The family lived at 1a James Street, Redfern.

Fox died on 22 December 1955 at Redfern, NSW, aged 82, and was buried in the Old Catholic Section of Rookwood Cemetery.

Occupation & interests

Labor Mayor Roberts claimed in November 1920 that Redfern Council was in a better financial position than any other metropolitan municipalities. Fox, a non Labor alderman, ridiculed the accuracy of the financial state of Council. It was he said “a gross exaggeration” of the true position something that adversely reflected on Council, and its staff.

Fox was the Hon Secretary of the Randwick Rifle Club for over 20 years.

Local government service

Richard Fox was an alderman on Redfern Council, representing Surry Hills Ward in 1920-22. He was an unsuccessful candidate in the 1922,1925 and 1931 elections.
