Family background
Stephen Thomas Burcher was born in Liverpool, NSW, in 1854. He was married to Maria Thompson (1856-1941) on 13 March 1877 at Sydney. They had four sons and two daughters. He died on 21 October 1920, aged 66 years. Stephen Burcher’s brother was George Burcher, an alderman on Glebe Council 1888-93.
Local government service
Stephen Burcher was an alderman on Camperdown Council 1883-85. Burcher represented Camperdown Council at a conference at Newtown in 1883 held to consider the advisability of amalgamation of the boroughs of Newtown, Macdonaldtown and Camperdown. It did not proceed.
