Family background
William Mitford Hume was born 11 June 1840 at Strawberry Hills, NSW, the son of Andrew Hume and Anne Amelia Milford. He married Grace Parnell Bennett (1845-1926) at Sydney on 30 July 1868 and they had 2 sons and 6 daughters. He lived in Cleveland Street, Redfern.
Hume died at Surry Hills on 6 July 1911, aged 71 years, and was buried in Waverley Cemetery. He left a will and his estate and assets were assessed at £486.
Occupation & interests
William Hume worked with a small band of specialist tradesman with local addresses – builders, joiners and bricklayers, operating with minimal capital working around each other constructing brick and stone cottages. At the time of his death he worked at the Water and Sewerage Board.
Local government service
William Milford Hume was alderman on Redfern Council, representing Surry Hills Ward in 1872.
