Family background

William Robert Winning Sommer was born at Sydney on 25 March 1882, the son of William Sommer and Elizabeth Winning. He married Caroline Cooper at Sydney on 17 April 1907 and they had 4 daughters. They lived at 115 Bourke Street, Redfern.

Sommer died at Strathfield, NSW on 11 July 1943 and was cremated at Rookwood Crematorium.

Occupation & interests

Like many in inner industrial Sydney, William Sommer worked as a horse-drawn carrier. Whilst a member of the carrying firm WR and L Sommer he was declared bankrupt in 1926.

Local government service

William Sommer was an alderman for Surry Hills Ward of Redfern Council from 1917-20.
