Alexander Cruickshank was born at Morayshire, Scotland, in c1829. He was married in 1858, in Sydney, to Margaret O’Grady (1832-1902). They had two daughters and a son.

Cruickshank was a blacksmith; he ran his own smithy and engineering workshop at 65 Pyrmont Bridge Road, Camperdown for 56 years.

Alexander Cruickshank was an alderman on Camperdown Council 1870-84.
