Francis Thomas James Dick was born at Sydney in 1870, son of James Dick and Margaret. Unmarried, he died at 4 Eglinton Road Glebe on 8 August 1935, aged 65 years.
Occupation & interests
Dick joined the Government Printing Office, Ultimo as a 13 year old apprentice in 1883, working there as a printer for 50 years up to his retirement at the Liverpool Street Sydney branch in 1933.
Community activity
Dick as Mayor convened a public meeting at Glebe Town Hall on 23 June 1930 to consider what steps should be taken to relieve the prevailing distress in Glebe caused by unemployment. Two months later a Citizens Relief Committee requested Glebe Council to hand over the sheep and goat grazing at Jubilee Park. In rejecting the request Mayor Dick said ‘a goat was mentioned in the letter but they forgot to mention the goat that put forward the proposal’.
Local government service
Francis Dick was a president of the Glebe State Labour League, and the Glebe Municipal Assembly. He was a staunch supporter of the Forest Lodge and Glebe Boys Band. He was an alderman from 1926 until his death in 1935 and was mayor in 1930.
