Family background

George Downes Setchell was born on 2 February 1862 at Cooma, NSW, the son of William E F Setchell and Mary Ann Downes. He married Marian Eliza Wadely on 4 October 1883 at Newtown, NSW, and they had two sons and five daughters. George Setchell died at North Strathfield, NSW, on 6 May 1935, aged 71 years; he was buried at Rookwood Cemetery in the Church of England section. He left a Will and his estate and assets were assessed at £761. Setchell lived in Mitchell Road, Alexandria.

Occupation & interests

George Setchell, builder, was declared bankrupt in 1896. Setchell was elected vice president of the Waterloo Branch of the Australian Natives’ Association which was formed in 1902.

Local government service

Setchell was an alderman on Alexandria Council 1892-1903 representing the West Ward. His father William was also an alderman on the council, as was his brother also named William, and his nephew Edward.
