Family background

Joseph Lewis was born on 21 April 1856 at Goulburn, NSW, the son of John Frederick Lewis and Maria Austin. He married Grace Rushworth (1860-1928) on 3 September 1876 at Waterloo, NSW, and they had five sons and six daughters. Lewis died at Newtown on 24 September 1929, aged 73 years; he was buried at Rookwood Cemetery. He lived in Belmont Street, Alexandria.

Joseph Lewis was a Freemason and a member of the Ancient Order Foresters Court Morning Star.

Local government service

Joseph Lewis was an alderman on the Alexandria Council for two terms: 1914-15 and 1920-22
