Family background

Matthew Fawcett was born c1822 in Manchester, Lancastershire, England, son of Joseph Fawcett and Hannah. He married Mary Ann Chapman on 9 April 1843 at St Mary, Lambeth, London. Matthew Fawcett and his wife Mary Ann arrived in Sydney on the 9 January 1855 by the vessel ’Queen of England’. Matthew Fawcett died on 17 February 1880 at Bathurst, NSW (of Botany Road, Waterloo), aged 57 years and he was buried in the Old Church of England Section of Rookwood Cemetery. Matthew Fawcett left a Will and his estate and assets were assessed at £200. He lived in Bullanaming Street, Waterloo.

Matthew Fawcett was a Returning Officer for Waterloo Council in 1873.

Local government service

Matthew Fawcett was elected an alderman in November 1872 following the resignation of Alderman John Faulkes. Fawcett was an alderman on Waterloo Council in 1872-1874 representing East Ward. He was chairman of the Improvement Committee of Waterloo Council in 1872.
