Alfred Lipman Levy was born on 30 December 1845 in Wellington New Zealand; his parents were Solomon (1817-83) and Jane nee Harvey (1826-1901).

Levy was married twice. His first marriage was in 1867, in New Zealand, to Jane Maudin (1845-83). His second marriage was on 21 July 1884 in Wellington, New Zealand, to Annie Elizabeth Infold (1861-88).
