Family background

Henry Vickers was bornin 1840. He was married in 1865 in Sydney to Hannah Marks (1852-1906). He died on 3 September 1907, aged 67 years.

Occupation & interests

Henry Vickers founded Vickers & Cooke, coach makers of Francis Street, Glebe in 1868, later called Invincible Coach Works, which was taken over and became Sydney Tramway & Omnibus Company with Vickers its manager.

In 1871 Vickers’ coach works had 54 horse-drawn carriages and about 400 horses located at Pyrmont, Glebe and Waterloo. In 1885 when its coach workers went on strike, Vickers complained coach workers wanted 53 hours pay for 48 hours work.

Henry Vickers was an alderman on Camperdown Council 1870-71.
