Family background

John Buckley was born c1868, the son of James and Catherine Buckley.

Buckley married Elsie May Britton (1883-1944) at Stroud, NSW on 3 September 1907 and they had 3 sons and 3 daughters. The Buckleys lived at 10 Young Street, Redfern.

Buckley died on 6 December 1941, aged 73 years, at Park Street, Erskineville and was buried in the Catholic Section of Rookwood Cemetery. His estate and assets were assessed at £348.

Occupation & interests

As a labor alderman, John Buckley was anti Communist socially conservative with close links to the union movement.

Community activity

John Buckley was a Justice of the Peace (JP).

Local government service

John Buckley was elected an alderman for the Surry Hills Ward of Redfern Council, in 1911 after a recount and a court challenge. He resigned on 26 January 1917.
