Family background
Moses Moses was one of four children born to Leah Shannon and Abraham Moses; he was born in London in 1830. His siblings were named Julia, Sarah and Jacob (John). Abraham Moses migrated to Australia with his wife and three of his four children (including Moses) on the Palambam, along with his father, his sister-in-law (the wife of John Moses) and her children Deborah, Henry and Hannah. Abraham and Leah’s fourth child was born in Australia.
In 1851, Moses Moses was married to Caroline Joseph (1833-67). They had four children: Joseph, Amelia, Louis and Sarah. On 18 August 1857 it was reported that he was returning to England per the steamer Emeu on 11 September 1857. He returned briefly to Sydney in 1859 but by 1861 was living at St Pancras, England. By 1873 he had changed his name and was known as Sidney (or Sydney) Merton; he was a stockbroker. He died in London on 28 February 1880.
Local government service
On 9 April 1857, M Moses, merchant of Bridge Street, Sydney, nominated for the City of Sydney Council elections. Moses Moses was elected as an alderman for Bourke Ward on 11 April 1857, but his time on the council was short-lived at around 6 months. On 18 August 1857 it was reported that Moses was returning to England per the steamer Emeu on 11 September 1857. He returned briefly to Sydney in 1859 but by 1861 was living at St Pancras, England.
