Family background
Clifford Alfred Chate was born on 23 August 1888 at Sydney, the son of John Paul Chate and Mary Anne Beckett. He married Jessie Allen (d1971) at Sydney on 22 October 1912 and they had a son and a daughter. The family lived at 14 Bourke Street, Redfern and at 59 Baptist Street, Redfern. He died 7 January 1960 at Redfern, aged 71 years and was cremated at Eastern Suburbs Crematorium.

Clifford Chate was the Sports Secretary of the NSW branch of the Amalgamated Road Transport Workers Union of Australia in c1931.
Local government service
Clifford Chate was an alderman for Surry Hills Ward of Redfern Council in 1934-37. In July 1936 Mayor Joseph Gilmore called Vincent Pike, a Labor alderman, a buffoon in discussion on the Redfern Park pavilion. Labor alderman Clifford Chate leapt to his feet and demanded a Mayoral apology for the remark. The Mayor ordered Chate to sit down. Instead Chate walked out of the chambers followed by his fellow Labor alderman, leaving Council without a quorum.
