Family background

Edmund Coates was born on 24 March 1862 at Parramatta, NSW, the son of George Coates and Mary Larmer. His first name is sometimes spelled as Edwin or Edwyn (although further research is required, as Edwin Coates may be a different person to Edmund Coates). Edwin Coates married Caroline Ewan (1854-97) on 23 August 1886 at Parramatta, and they had a son. Edwin Coates died at Marrickville, NSW, on 8 September 1918, aged 53 years; he was buried at St John’s Cemetery, Parramatta.

Occupation & interests

Edmund Coates was elected working overseer of works for Alexandria Council in 1887 and valuer for Alexandria for the municipal years of 1891-93.

Local government service

Following the re-adjustment of the Borough, Edmund Coates was elected an alderman on Alexandria Council 1886-87 representing the Beaconsfield Ward.
