Family background

Edward Robert (Ted) Elvy was born 24 February 1904 in Darlington, NSW, the son of Arthur Selwyn Elvy and Mary Florence Fisk.

Elvy married Lavinia Blanche Serena White (1904-1931) 14 November 1925 at Newtown. He married Clarice Kidd (1913-2009) on 22 February 1935 at Newtown. He lived at 31 Ivy Street, Redfern.

Elvy died on 9 October 1973, aged 69 years, in Sydney, and was cremated at Northern Suburbs Crematorium. He was a third generation butcher and a third generation mayor. His grandfather founded the first Elvy butchery in the district and was mayor of Darlington for many years. His father Arthur Selwyn Elvy, a Darlington alderman for 40 years included 19 terms as mayor.

Occupation & interests

Edward Elvy was the third generation of inner city self-employed butchers who was attracted to municipal office by a sense of public service as well as self interest. He was a Freemason and member of Lodge Hercules. Edward Elvy was also a member of The Whale Beach Surf Lifesaving Club and The Moby Dick Surfers Club.
