Family background
George William Lander was born in 1852 in London, England, the son of Jeremiah Lander and Miriam Tomes. He immigrated to Australia with his parents and siblings, and arrived at Sydney on 21 October 1854 on board the ship Anglo Saxon.
Lander married Eliza Flora French (1853-1933) at Waterloo, NSW on 11 December 1871 and they had 9 sons and 2 daughters. He lived at Abercrombie Street, Redfern. Lander died at Lidcombe on 21 June 1928, aged 76 years, and was buried in the Methodist Section of Rookwood Cemetery.

Community activity
George Lander was a suburban member on the Board of Water Supply and Sewerage in the 1890s. He was a justice of the peace (JP).
Local government service
Lander was elected as an alderman for Golden Grove Ward in 1882. He resigned in June 1896.
