Family background

George Waite was born at Moonambel, Victoria, on 27 September 1860, the son of William Waite and Agnes Blyth.

He married Emily Jane Hill (1856-1925) at Tamworth, NSW, on 4 September 1880 and they had 6 children. They lived at 91 Walker Street, Redfern.

Waite died on 16 September 1941, aged 80, at North Sydney and was cremated at Northern Suburbs Crematorium. He left a will and his estate and assets were assessed at £2,459.

Occupation & interests

A Lang Labor alderman from Surry Hills Ward, George Waite worked as a railway employee at Eveleigh workshops was a committed union man. He was a Freemason and a member of Old Oak Lodge.

Local government service

George Waite was elected an alderman for Surry Hills Ward of Redfern Council for two terms: 1928-34 and 1937-41. He was mayor in 1930.
