Family background

James Johnston was born 3 March 1827 at Drumholm, Donegal, Ireland, the son of James Johnston and his wife Eliza. He married Eliza Walker (1842-1916) 7 November 1854 at Drumholm, Donegal, Ireland, and they had four children.  Johnston and his family immigrated to Sydney in 1864 on board the ship ‘Sandringham’ and they had three more children after arriving in Sydney. James Johnston died 21 January 1904, aged 78 years, at his home ‘Antrim’, Bligh Street, Newtown, and he was interred in the Old Church of England Section of Rookwood Cemetery. He left no Will.

James Johnson was an alderman on Darlington Council for two terms, in 1886-89 and 1895-1903.
