Family background

John Crowe was born in about 1856 at Killaloe Broadford, County Clare, Ireland, the son of John Crowe and Bridget Connell.

He married Ann McGovern (1861-1912) on 7 July 1887 at Sydney and they had 1 son and 4 daughters. The family lived at 105 Regent Street, Redfern. Crowe died at Sydney Hospital on 22 April 1911, aged 55, from injuries received from being thrown from his cab, which collided with an electric light standard in Bligh Street, Sydney. He left a will and his estate and assets were assessed at £275. Crowe lived at 105 Regent Street, Redfern.

John Crowe was a Regent Street, Redfern grocer, he belonged to the self-employed group of alderman who were conservative in outlook.

Community activity

During his term as Mayor, John Crowe was part of a deputation of suburban alderman who presented resolutions to the Water Supply and Sewerage Board which were passed at a recent aldermanic conference. The resolutions included, inter alia, that the Water Supply and Sewerage Board should be held liable for any claims for compensation for accidents in streets which are attributed to the bursting or breakage of any water services or main pipe and each council should collect the water sewerage rates levied in its borough.

Local government service

John Crowe was elected an alderman for the Golden Grove Ward in 1883. He retired in 1884 and re-entered the council in 1887 when he represented the Redfern Ward.
