John Elvy is a property consultant who has worked in commercial, retail and industrial real estate for 38 years. He is Chairman of Global Retail Services Pty Ltd and Leighton Properties Pty Ltd, a Director of James Fielding Group Limited, Chairman of LJ Hooker Commercial Group and Property Advisor to Leighton Holdings Limited. He is a Fellow of the Australian Property Industry, a member and Chairman of the Property Council of Australia, serving on the Urban Affairs and Planning Committee and a member of the Parramatta and Development Board and Parramatta Central Planning Committee.

Community activity

John Elvy serves as an ambassador on behalf of the National Museum of Australia. He was president of the Rotary Club of Strathfield (Sydney Cove) from 1993 to 1994.

Local government service

John Elvy was elected Alderman of Strathfield Council on 2 August 1975 and served until 26 September 1983. After the dismissal of Sydney City Council in 1987, he returned to Strathfield and was Mayor of Strathfield from 1989 to 1990 and again in 1995. He was instrumental in having a time capsule inserted in The Square to be opened in 2088. Over 530 new citizens were naturalised during his term.

Elvy was Alderman for Phillip Ward, 14 April 1984 until 26 March 1987 when the Council was replaced by a three-member Commission. He was re-elected to the City Council from 1991 to 1994. He was a member of the Works and Housing Committee and the Properties Committee in 1984. In 1985, he was appointed a member of the Properties and Housing Committee and the Works Committee. He was also a member of the Properties, Housing and Works Committee, 1985-86 and the Building and Development Committee, 1986-87. He served as an alternate member of the Maritime Services Board Foreshores Building Committee of Advice and became a member of the Committee to Investigate All Aspects of Outdoor Eatery Establishments in 1984. Elvy represented the Liberal Party.
