Family background

John Maxwell Haynes was born at Sydney on 28 September 1917. His parents may have been David Haynes and his wife Emily, nèe Lawler. He died on 26 April 1992 at Newtown, survived by his widow. He was privately interred.

Occupation & interests

John Maxwell Haynes was living in Newtown when he enlisted in the Australian Army on 8 August 1940. His next of kin was E Kinnane. He was discharged as Lance Corporal with the 18th Supply Depot Company AASC on 20 November 1945. Jack Haynes lived most of his life in Newtown. He retired in 1986.

Local government service

Jack Haynes was an Alderman of the South Sydney Municipal Council from 1969 until 1981 when it reamalgamated with Sydney Council.

Haynes was Alderman for Newtown Ward, 1 January 1982 to 26 March 1987 when the Council was replaced by a three-member Commission. He was Chairman and member of the Finance and Industrial Committee, 1982 and the Building and Development Committee, 1985-87. He was also appointed a member of the Sydney Cove Redevelopment Authority, 1982-83. John Haynes represented the Australian Labor Party.
