Family background

John Fitzroy McElhone was born in Sydney on 6 December 1899, son of Alderman Arthur Joseph McElhone (1868-1946) and his wife Eva Catherine, née Walsh. He died on11 March 1970 at Connells Point, survived by his wife Joyce, and was privately interred in the family vault at WaverleyCemetery.

Occupation & interests

John Fitzroy McElhone trained as an accountant. He was the son of a Sydney Mayor, nephew of a Lord Mayor William Percy McElhone (1871-1932), and grandson of a City Alderman John McElhone (1833-98). He was presumably named for the Council Ward (and after the NSW Governor) represented so consistently by his father and grandfather. On the death of his father on 17 June 1946, he succeeded him as Alderman for Fitzroy Ward. John Fitzroy McElhone enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force on 29 July 1941, giving his father as next of kin. When he was discharged on 21 May 1946 he had attained the rank of Flight Lieutenant.

Local government service

John Fitzroy McElhone was Alderman for Fitzroy Ward, 13 July 1946 to 4 December 1953. He was a member of the Works Committee, 1946-48 and the Health and Recreations Committee, 1946-47. Between 1948 and 1953 he was a member of the Finance Committee and the City Planning and Improvements Committee.
