Family background

Joseph Warburton was born at Tumut, NSW, on 15 October 1879, the son of Thomas Warburton and Hannah Mellor. He married Elizabeth Price at Redfern on 9 July 1905 and then Florence Phillis at Redfern on 13 August 1947. Warburton lived at 117 Marriott Street, Redfern and 94 Bourke Street, Redfern.

Warburton died 27 July 1948 at Sydney and was buried in Botany Cemetery in the Church of England Section.

Occupation & interests

Joseph Warburton a tram driver was a staunch trade unionist.

Community activity

Joseph Warburton was a trustee and a committeeman of the Tramway Union.

Local government service

Joseph Warburton was elected an alderman for Surry Hills Ward of Redfern Council in 1920. He served two terms: 1920-22 and 1937-48 and was mayor in 1946.
