Robert Murphy was born at Camperdown in 1868. He was married at Richmond in 1893 to Ellen (Ellie) Eather; they had four sons and one daughter. Murphy died on 9 November 1943, aged 75 years.

Murphy was the President of the Granville Chamber of Commerce and the Patron of the Granville RSSAILA.
